Final Poster...Finally!

After collaborating with another designer, Jessica, on a final banner design we came up with the design below. Also, I have a variety colors we were trying to decide on. This is the final banner that everyone agreed upon with the color combination preferred by Dorit.

Website Banner-Continued...

Many of the fonts reflect Dorit’s desire for moving, “dancing” fonts and some she particularly chose.

After all the font options I presented, we chose something completely separate which is Rockwell. I’m happy with the choice because I was pushing for a more static font that can be read at all sizes. Below are the banners that were used at placeholders for the text and logo for the top of the website.

Website Banner...An Ongoing Project

The website banner, at the top of the site, has been a constant project throughout the summer and it’s been difficult not because of the actual task but because of the lack of decisions that can be made or that keep changing. To start, Dorit simply wanted the site name “Greenlifestyles.org”, the words Green Lifestyle TV, Green Lifestyle Film Festival and the existing logo as a banner. My first task was to find a font that Dorit approved of and her taste tends to be slightly…crazy. That means nothing static or “simple”, she wants bright, curving and even illustrative fonts. As my experience and typography classes have taught me, these types of fonts can be a bad design choice but ultimately the client will win. Below are a bunch of font options that I presented.

Last Meeting - August 26

My final meeting was Friday, August 26 at our original office in West Hollywood. I found out at the meeting that our new office space we were hoping to rent fell through and now Dorit has to start over looking for a place after packing everything up. Since most of the summer interns have gone back to school I think they should be able to function in a smaller space and still be productive.

At the meeting there were two new interns that will be working at GLFF during the fall semester since they live and go to school in LA. Our new marketing intern, Armen, presented a new marketing powerpoint presentation on our budget and how we can use ad space. It was interesting, while slightly confusing, to learn what you can use for advertising when running a non-profit organization. Also, I met a new artist/graphic designer who will be joining for the fall. She is a great painter and drawer so she will be creating some posters for our joint campaign with Breathe LA for cleaning up and “greening” the ports and harbors throughout the Southern California area, especially LA County. She is an avid scuba diver and often has excursions off of Catalina Island and even in one year it is clear how much the water changes with the extra pollution being added.

I presented all the new banner design with a variety of color choices and we made a joint decision on the banner below. Dorit loves orange plus it works well with the yellows and oranges found in the existing logo. The original background was blue but after asking multiple people in the office about the design they did not like the blue because they felt green was a better choice when our name is Green Lifestyles. I worked with different font colors and changed sizes of the text as well. Green did not make the words pop as well as the darker blue and we want people to see our organization name right away. I did changes on the right so the logo and background color was more transparent and softer so it transitions into the background better but still separate. After making the final decision and emailing the choice to the entire board and summer interns, we discussed the summer and what the next step is. Dorit was very happy with my work and help throughout the summer and would like me to stay on throughout the school year. I have a full schedule but I will be helping as much as I can with graphics and making decisions with the new designers. The first week I’m back I will be working on designs for business cards. She would like a single sided and double sided design that includes the design aspects from the banner so we have a cohesive brand.

In Progress Banner--August 23

Currently I’m working on and finishing up one of my last projects for the summer for GLFF. Since we have multiple hands in most design and organization decisions, this is a joint project. Jessica, another design intern, and I have collaborated on the banner that will be included on the top of the website homepage and possibly on posters for the organization when it is featured at events. Below are a few options of the banner with a variety of color options and combinations based on the colors found in the existing logo.

Tim Burton Exhibit-August 17

I went to the LACMA and the Tim Burton exhibit this past weekend. It was inspiring to see how young and talented Burton started out as an artist and the fact that he started out as an art student.

"The exhibition brings together over 700 drawings, paintings, photographs, moving-image works, storyboards, puppets, concept artworks, maquettes, costumes, and cinematic ephemera, including art from a number of unrealized and little-known personal projects. Many of these objects come from the artist's own archive, as well as from studio archives and private collections of Burton's collaborators. Hundreds of never-before-exhibited artworks and sketches will be joined by a selection of film posters accompanied by music composed for the exhibition by Burton's longtime collaborator Danny Elfman.

Two large-scale outdoor artworks are also installed on campus: a topiary inspired by Edward Scissorhands (1990), and Balloon Boy, an enormous figure based on an amalgamation of characters that Burton first introduced in his 1997 book The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories."

Progress of Site--August 8

Since arriving at Green Lifestyles in June, the new site has moved ahead but still has a long ways to go as far as layout and information organization. The GreenLifestyles.org website focuses on living a green life in every aspect such as eating organic, using organic or vegan beauty products or entertainment that will only positively benefit your mind. Because there are so many different subjects surrounding the site there is a lot of information that needs to be divided into categories. While the heads of the web design and communication "departments" have been loading information onto the site as well as all of our images from past events, the group of interns has been developing design for the site as well as posters for the events that were held this summer.

It's progressed throughout the summer but it has been difficult developing a cohesive design with so many different people adding designs and ideas. It has been an experience of learning how to work with a client and a start up organization and website. As of today, the site still has not been publicly launched but we hope to launch in the next month or so. There have been set-backs such as the client changing their mind and moving offices. Right now, the organization is moving down the street so it has been chaotic and the site progress has been put on hold as that takes place but our meeting this week Friday (my final meeting) will be at the new location so I'm excited to see the building.

Below is a screen shot of the site so far with the design elements that Dorit has chosen from my background design and colors as well as design elements that she found on other sites that she liked.

The banner (in orange) is a place holder for the moment as myself and another design intern are developing a few final ideas for the banner at the top of the site incorporating the original logo and colors found on the site.

Famous Monsters of Filmland--August 1

In the midst of my Green Lifestyle internship, I found another opportunity through a magazine my friend works for near LA in the San Fernando Valley called Famous Monsters of Filmland. I contacted them with my resume and a link to my website with work samples, looking for freelance work they may need a designer to work on. During the end of the month of July I had an interview with their creative director and was given “homework” to finish to display my abilities and skills as a designer with programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.

It would have been a great opportunity where I would be working three times a week at the magazine doing photo correction, file formatting and layout for the editions they release. Unfortunately, I discovered it too late and there wasn’t enough time for them to train me with their company before I would be leaving to return to school in Wisconsin. They loved the work I did but the timing wasn’t ideal. Hopefully I can keep them as a contact and resource if I return to California after graduation.

Green Fair LA--July 30

The event started at 10am and lasted into the evening but each intern was asked to volunteer for one 2 hour spot at some point during the day. The fair was held at the Los Angeles Technical College located near downtown. Thankfully, it was held partially indoors, under large tents because it gets extremely hot and sunny in that area. There were about 20 to 30 booths at the fair, including our own as well as live entertainment and organic/vegan food trucks set up outside of the college. I was technically in the second group of volunteers from 10am until 12pm but when I arrived the booth was still not set up and boxes were everywhere. Luckily, another graphic design intern, Catherine had arrived around 9am and we quickly began organizing and setting up the booth with our posters, informational flyers, and sign up/volunteer sheets for the website. We also organized the raffle prizes Dorit brought along such as vegan/green lifestyle books and DVDs. My favorite prizes were the two vegan necklaces that were available. They were gorgeous ivory necklaces made from an ivory tree rather than ivory from the husks of elephants

After taking around an hour to set up the booth and organize the prizes, I was able to take turns walking around the fair to explore other booths and vendors (and get free samples!). Attending an event likes this is always interesting and informative because I’m still learning a lot about what it takes to live green. There was every form of organization or business at the event such as green cleaning supplies, organic grocery delivery company, eco-friendly baby clothes and toys and organic soaps and lotions. By 12:30 my shift was over and another intern came to replace me but we had three volunteers sign up and one filmmaker who was very interested in developing green videos for the website and the next film festival we hold. The one drawback to the overall even was that they charged people to come into the event and see the booths so I believe that we lost interested people because of it.

Meeting Before Fair--July 28

The main area of focus for the meeting is preparation for Green Fair L.A this coming weekend, July 30 in downtown Los Angeles. Greenlifestyles.org was one of the organizations and businesses picked to set up a booth at the fair that focuses on and brings attention to the importance of living a green life. I’m not sure what to expect as far as the venue and the turn out of events such as these but it should be a fun time to check out the other booths and vendors.

Dorit tends to develop last minute ideas that, while good, have little time to become organized. As designers we have all the posters ready for the event to hang up at our booth. We have a poster with the website name and logo as well as another one advertising our Green Beauty Campaign that launched after the salon makeover event in June. The idea for a raffle will bring people to our booth to learn more about our website and win prizes but I’m curious how she will find prizes by Saturday.

Website Progress

I have been a little crazed here in California with developing designs for the GLFF website, 10-day vacation back home and finding another internship for the remainder of the summer. So, to make up for my blogging hiatus, I will make multiple long posts today to catch up on the design and website progress.

The process has been slow but after revisions and changes in colors we have decided on a background for the new website. Dorit wanted to try various shades of green and we polled the design, marketing and board at Green Lifestyles to everyone's input. The design below was chosen and below that is a screen shot of the background on the site.

I designed the background around Dorit's desire to have a design with movement and allow it flow around the website page.

Green Beauty Makeover Event

The Green Beauty Makeover Campaign kickoff event was very successful. I wasn't told how many people they expected to attend but as the evening progressed more people were circulating in and out of the salon. The salon itself was great! It was a green salon so all the materials used were natural which could be seen in the impressive wood beams on the exposed ceiling as well as recycled "garbage" used to create sculptures. Below are many photos I took at the event, which can also be found on Green Lifestyles Facebook page.

A Natural Beauty MakeOver fundraising event for Green Lifestyle TV, offering chemically safe, green beauty makeovers and educational presentations

Every day the average woman, man and child is exposed to potentially damaging chemicals in skincare, hair, dental and beauty products, including parabens, phthalates, and toluene. By switching to eco-conscious, natural beauty and hygiene alternatives, however, it is possible to look gorgeous and be healthy without poisoning ourselves and the planet all at the same time.

On June 14, 2011, nonprofit Green Lifestyle TV will team up with a very eco-conscious salon: in Silverlake ( Natural Mind Beauty,) to offer “A Day of Green Beauty” fundraiser. All proceeds from the event will benefit future Green Lifestyle TV’s educational programming.

· For a $150 suggested donation, participants will receive a complete makeover using natural and organic beauty products (style and blow out, makeup application lesson, organic facial, and a hand reflexology session etc). Each makeover also includes a choice of educational programmes: a diet makeover for natural beauty or an exercise consultation with a certified movement analyst.

· Make Up applications and lessons are with our Celebrity Green Make Up Artist Paige Padgett (presently the make up artist for Jillian Michaels of The Biggest Loser TV Show).

· Gen Anderson, host of the TV Show The Guiltless Gourmet will be giving a talk on Eating For Beauty.

ABOUT GREEN LIFESTYLE TV (GLTV)

Green Lifestyle TV will launch in summer 2011 as a web TV channel, providing educational & entertaining programming that emphasizes daily living from a green perspective.

Green Lifestyle TV is a production of the Green Lifestyle Film Festival, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. For more information, visit www.greenlifestyles.org.

Website Design

After our event on Tuesday, June 14, the design team will begin our work and main focus on the website design. Right now, the main focus is the organization of information which is difficult to navigate at the moment. Dorit wants a clean design but there is so much information that they want included on the site we will need to seriously organize it all. Lindsay and I were discussing ideas at our meeting and we seemed to have similar tastes in style and design. Right now, we both threw around ideas of using a yellow/green background color and having white vines growing out in the background while remaining subtle and light. Also, we both decided to incorporate burnt orange into the site information.

Green Printing

Something else that excites me about the organization, is our use of a completely green printing company. The company is called Design Printing and is located in Los Angeles. They use all green and recycled products which is perfect for GL and the message they are trying to develop. I am looking forward to taking a tour of the shop and seeing their procuess and materials they use. Since I work in a print shop in Milwaukee, it will be interesting to see how they vary from other print shops.

Breathe L.A Boat Trip Poster

Another design that I am starting some sketches and word maps for ideas, is the Breath of Life Awards and Boat Trip Posters for Breathe L.A. As I had stated above, Breathe L.A focuses on greening the ports of L.A and improving the horrible conditions and pollutions problems. Dorit has suggested creating some form of nautical imagery, such as a boat or harbor and likes the idea of incorporating lungs into the design. I am going to start some sketches and ideas, possibly trying the lungs out as the actual sails to focus on the “breathe” component of the organization.

First Task

One of my first tasks is designing the banner that will be featured at the top of the website. The logo needs to be placed within text that states, “Green Lifestyles” and the main components of the organization such as Green Lifestyle T.V and Green Lifestyle Film Festival. Dorit would like a font that is flowing and appears as if it is “dancing” around the logo. The website name should also be placed below this logo and move along the curve of the circle, not static. Right now I need to find a handful of fonts and play with the placement of the logo and have Dorit decide what she likes best.

Few previous ideas that incorporate the logo and text. My main challenge is having the logo be large enough so you can see all the details. It is a very detail oriented logo, which they want to keep, and it is a struggle to work with since it doesn't necessarily work on large and small scales.

Client Style

This internship is my first experience working with a client and exploring ways to incorporate my personal design style along with theirs. Dorit loves color, especially bright warm colors! Right now, she prefers burnt oranges, reds and blends of yellows and oranges as well as incorporating green for the Green Lifestyles message. She described the style she is searching for as a Zen theme with clean colors and a dominating white palette. Another quality she likes to include with informational posters is borders around different components to emphasize their importance. Incorporating preferred colors and borders should not be a difficult challenge. One challenging aspect will be the actual design. Most designers tend to believe that less is more in terms of maintaining a clean design, but clients may not always believe that. Dorit is one of those clients that likes lots of information on their posters and website while shying away from white space. Hopefully once I start doing more design we can compromise to develop something we both enjoy.

Creative Team

Along with myself, there are three other summer design interns and we will all be working as a collective design team. As always when working with a group of people, especially those with varying creative views, there will need to be compromise. Two of the interns, Nick and Lindsay, are both from New York but attend Boston University and Catherine is a student at the Rhode Island School of Design. They all seem great so far and hopefully we can work together collaboratively by combining and highlighting eachothers skills. Nick and Catherine both excel in web design work and are skilled in Flash so I am hoping to learn more in both those areas this summer.

First Meeting

I went to my first design team meeting last Wednesday, June 8, in Hollywood. Technically, the area is called La Brea, located in West Hollywood but simply calling it Hollywood sounds so much better J Also, the office is located right across the street from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and I’m dying to see the Tim Burton exhibit on display.

Untitled (Ramone), Tim Burton, 1980-1990, pen and ink, marker and colored pencil on paper

http://www.lacma.org/art/exhibition/tim-burton

The offices for Green Lifestyles, are located in the Breathe L.A building. Breathe L.A is an organization that works alongside GL in and right now is in pursuit of “greening” the ports and harbors around the L.A County area. I hope to learn more about this organiz

ation this summer and plan on attending the boat outing and tour of the ports in July. Dorit, the CEO of GL, describes the ports around L.A as horrible and polluted.

Wednesday, June 1, 2011

I prefer placing the logo within the text and having the text build up around it. I used an Arabic text that Dorit suggested she liked.

I placed the original logo on the left side and played with the text by having the organization name, Green Lifestyles, large and other parts of the organization, Green Lifestyle Film Festival and Green Lifestyle TV, smaller and above. I worked with the same greens that have been used throughout existing blogs, websites and newsletters.

An original logo idea. I based the circle off the ideas and practices of Green Lifestyles that we should follow in our everyday life. They should be circular and constant and touch all areas of our lifestyle. Dorit likes bright colors, specifically oranges and greens.
